More about cataracts
What are cataracts?
Cataracts are a common age-related eye condition where the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, leading to blurry or hazy vision. This clouding develops gradually and can significantly impact daily activities such as reading, driving—especially at night—and recognising faces.
Common symptoms
- Blurred or cloudy vision
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Faded or yellowed colours
- Frequent changes in glasses prescriptions
What are the risks?
Cataracts typically develop in adults over the age of 60, but can also occur earlier due to diabetes, eye injuries, genetic factors, smoking, or prolonged UV exposure.
If left untreated, cataracts can lead to progressive vision loss. Fortunately, they can be effectively treated with cataract surgery, which removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
